Jay’s NHL Power Rankings

Building the regular-season sample

We’re waiting for every team to reach five regular-season games. Once the sample is ready, the first Tuesday edition will appear here. Preseason and playoff results won’t enter these rankings.

A weekly read: this edition stays fixed while the league snapshot updates hourly. New editions are scheduled for Tuesdays at 9 AM Eastern.

Building the sample

The league snapshot is available separately. Rankings wait for regular-season results so that early impressions do not masquerade as a full-season picture.

How Jay’s rankings work

Jay’s NHL Index: standings points percentage 25%, win quality 30%, offense 20%, defense 20%, last five games 5%. Win quality combines opponent points percentage (80%) and goal margin (20%). Every team needs five regular-season games before rankings are published.

Commentary is generated from the published statistical snapshot. No preseason or postseason games are included. Movement compares published weekly editions, not hourly standings.
